Things to Do in Jasper Canada

Zoom Through the Park on Mountain Bikes

    • Trails range in difficulty from easy to difficult and are shared with hikers and horseback riders. Because bikes are so quiet, they may easily alarm bears, so it's best to yell nonstop when approaching dense vegetation, when you approach a corner or if there is something noisy in the environment like wind or a nearby stream.

    Observe the Wildlife

    • Hikes and drives in the park expose visitors to 69 species of mammals. Although some are more easily viewed than others, sometimes all it takes is sighting a vehicle stopped on a roadside to see what is visible from there. Mammals at the park include moose, caribou, mountain goats, bears, coyotes, wolves and beavers. The park also has 16 specifies of reptiles and amphibians and 277 types of birds.

    Miette Hot Springs

    • Soak in the waters of Miette Hot Springs in water rich in calcium, sulfate and rotten-egg-smelling hydrogen sulfide pumped from Sulphur Creek that is cleaned and cooled and then fed into a comfortable swimming pool.

    Jasper Tramway up Whistler's Mountain

    • Taking the tram is an easy way to "climb" into the alpine tundra. Views from the top include vistas of six mountain ranges as well as lakes, the Athabasca River and the town of Jasper below. Beginning at an elevation of 4,279 feet, the railway climbs to its terminus at 7,472 feet. At the top are boardwalks and hiking trails.

    Columbia Icefield

    • The Athabasca Glacier--an extension of the Columbia Icefield, the largest ice mass in the Rockies--abuts the Icefields Parkway. You can take a three-to-four-hour interpretive hike or a full-day trip on the glacier with trained guides, or do it the easier way by driving up on to the glacier in a special bus.

    Canyons and Waterfalls

    • Maligne Canyon is carved into ancient limestone and features six bridges spanning the gorge as well as unique landforms like potholes scraped away by glaciers and water. Sunwapta Falls is a particularly powerful waterfall flowing over hard quartzite into soft limestone beneath. Athabasca Falls formed over a hanging valley left behind by glaciers.

    Boating

    • Take out a canoe or a rowboat onto Maligne, Patricia and Pyramid Lakes. Or try whitewater rafting on the Athabasca and Sunwapta Rivers.
