How to Tile Before Installing the Kitchen Cabinets

    • 1). Check the subfloor to make sure it is free of staples, glue, or small remnants of carpet padding. The subfloor is the wood, or sometimes concrete, beneath any carpet or other flooring. Remove anything that might cause the tile to be applied unevenly.

    • 2). Measure the length of the room and the width of the room. Snap a chalk line in the center of each direction. This should create a center point in the room.

    • 3). Lay out the tile in the room without mortar. Start at the center line in the room and lay out all of the whole tiles. Be sure to use 1/4-inch tile spacers between the tiles for proper spacing. Simply place the "+" shaped tile spacer between the tiles as you lay them. This will allow for uniform spacing between the tiles.

    • 4). Mix the thin set mortar according to the manufacturer's directions, as different brands may require different preparation. Apply the mortar with a notched trowel. Use the flat edge of the notched trowel to apply it, and ensure that the subfloor is covered evenly with the thin set mortar.

Once the thin set mortar is evenly applied, press the tiles into place, with spacers between each tile. Only apply a small amount of thin set mortar at a time to prevent the mortar from drying out before the tile is applied.

    • 5). Measure the edges of the room so that you can cut the border tiles. You will need to get correct measurements for each of the tiles, so measure carefully and remember to include a spacer allowance of 1/4-inch on all sides. Mark the measurements on the tiles with a pencil. Use a table saw to cut the tiles. Apply the cut tiles in the same manner as the whole tiles. Allow all of the tiles to dry overnight.

    • 6). Mix the grout according to the manufacturer's directions. Apply it to the tile crevices with a rubber float. Once applied, remove the excess grout with a damp sponge. Let the grout dry for two to three days before installing the kitchen cabinets.
