- 1). Contact your Web host and find our your server's IP address and FTP username and password, if you do not already know it.
- 2). Access your server's files using an FTP program. Free FTP programs include FileZilla, Coffee Cup FTP and Core FTP. Programs like Smart FTP also offer 30-day evaluation periods. You may also be able to access your server's files using your Web host's online file management program, if the host provides one.
- 3). Navigate to the Drupal file or folder you want to remove write permissions from. After installation, you'll generally want to remove the permissions from the Settings.PHP file inside the "Sites/Default" directory.
- 4). Right-click on the file. Select "File Permissions." Deselect each of the "Write" boxes, or set the numeric value to "505."
- 5). Click "OK" to save the changes. The Drupal file is no longer writable.
