How to Fix a Home Window

    • 1). Remove all loose shards of the broken pane of glass. If the window is still basically intact, attach duct tape to the window and knock the window loose with a rubber mallet so that it is easier to remove.

    • 2). Pry up the glazing compound with a chisel or an old screwdriver. If the glazing compound is too hard for easy removal, heat up the compound with either a propane torch or a standard blow dryer. The heat produced by a blow dryer should be enough to melt the compound into a removable state.

    • 3). Remove the old glazier's points. These are small metal anchors that hold the window pane in place.

    • 4). Measure the opening of the window in its cleaned-out state to get the correct figures for a replacement pane, using a ruler or tape measure. Subtract 1/16 inch from each of the dimensions to arrive at the proper measurement for the replacement pane when it is put into new compound glaze.

    • 5). Prime the area of the frame in which the replacement glass will be fit with linseed oil and give it 20 minutes. Place a bedding coat of glazing compound that is 1/16 inch thick.

    • 6). Position the replacement pane of glass and insert matchsticks around the perimeter. The matchsticks will help you center the glass into the opening. Press the glass into the glazing compound and install two metal glazier's points on each side of the window.

    • 7). Roll out a rope of glazing compound about 1/4 inch thick. Press the rope of compound around the edges of the window sash.

    • 8). Bevel the glazing compound by holding a utility knife at an angle between 30 and 40 degrees. Trim away any excess compound with a putty knife. Allow one week for the compound to completely dry before painting around the installation. Overlap the glass by about 1/16 inch to improve the weather seal with paint. Do not clean off any paint from the window until it has dried.
