- Many feline urinary blockages are caused by the high amounts of urine alkalizing metabolites in most commercial cat foods. The acidity and anti-bacterial properties of apple cider vinegar can help break up the blockage. Mix 1/4 tsp. apple cider vinegar with 1-1/2 tsp. of water and administer the mixture to your cat with an oral syringe or drip into his food. Repeat every six hours until the infection is gone. Use raw, unfiltered and unpasteurized vinegar for best results. Do not administer this remedy if your cats is sensitive to yeast.
- Urinary blockages in cats are caused by struvite crystals that form when a kitty's diet is too alkaline. Botanical vaccinium macrocarpon, otherwise known as cranberry extract, can dissolve struvite crystals within hours and prevent harmful bacteria from clinging to the walls of your cat's urethra and bladder. Cranberry extract can be bought in a homeopathic preparation in the proper dosage to treat your cat.
- Uva ursi or "bearberry" is another homeopathic remedy that can relieve your cat's urinary pain. This small berry has antiseptic and astringent properties that help prevent and treat urinary tract infections in both cats and humans. Uva ursi works by balancing the pH level of the bladder, deterring the growth of bacteria, kidney stones and urinary blockages. It can also be used as a diuretic. This remedy can be purchased in safe doses from companies that sell natural pet remedies.
