The Best Rare CDs

    Imports

    • Generally speaking, import CDs are albums that are either out of print in the U.S. or manufactured elsewhere in the world. In the case of album titles that are produced in the U.S. as well, imported copies will often have different album covers or packaging, making for unique, treasured items for collectors and fans. In addition, import CDs often feature bonus tracks not included on the U.S. release. Prices can range from normal to extremely high, depending upon the rarity of the disc. Internet stores and auction sites are a good place to look for imports.

    Live Concert CDs

    • Usually, with a little online investigation or research into a band's discography, one can discover an obscure live album or concert disc. Individual concerts or tour compilations are often put on disc and distributed directly through a band's website or specialty music store. Used copies are also sometimes available for online purchase. Because the music is recorded live, the quality may not be as good as a studio album. The benefits of a live album, however, include new or unreleased songs, spontaneous covers and the conversation between the band and fans in-between songs, which is often audible on the disc.

    Indie Label Music

    • Sometimes a band releases an album before signing to a major record label, and other times, a band sticks with an independent -- or indie -- label, never releasing music through a major record deal. In either case, many indie label CDs are rare to come by, because they are not produced or sold in as many quantities as major label releases. Listen to your favorite musician before she was a star, or reject the radio's offerings and find something entirely new to listen to. Either way, you can rest assured that you are one of few people -- relatively speaking, anyway -- who own the disc you've purchased.

    Collector's Boxed Sets

    • Every so often, a band or musician will release a boxed set or collector's disc. These items are often valuable because they include bonus tracks, DVDs, photos, literature or other media not included in the original album release. In the case of older or out-of-print albums, the music is usually also re-mastered, making for a superb listening experience. Though they can be pricey, boxed sets and collector's discs are a worthwhile purchase for someone who would like to own a rare CD, as quantities are usually limited and only available for a short time.
