What is the Difference Between Natural Gas & Fuel Oil?

    Natural Gas

    • Natural gas is a mixture of methane and other gases. It is naturally produced when plants and animals decay, and is part of the fossil fuel family.

    Fuel Oil

    • Fuel oils are burnable liquids extracted from crude oil. Fuel oils include heating oil, kerosene and diesel.

    Natural Gas Use

    • Natural gas in its native state is not an efficient fuel source. It must be processed to extract methane gas, which is then used for home cooking, artificial fireplaces, and other applications. Compressed natural gas is used to power engines.

    Fuel Oil Use

    • Fuel oils are used for home heating systems, kerosene burners, camp stoves and as diesel fuel for engines.

    Environmental Impact

    • Natural gas burns cleaner and has almost no environmentally harmful byproducts. Burning fuel oil produces air pollutants such as tiny particles and toxic gases.
