How to Run Electric Water Pumps in Street Cars

    • 1). Park the vehicle on a flat, level surface, and open the hood and remove the radiator cap.

    • 2). Drain the radiator. Slide a pan or small bucket under the radiator drain petcock and open the petcock to allow the coolant to drain into the container. Loosen the bolts on the fan shroud with a wrench, and push the shroud back to expose the water pump.

    • 3). Remove the radiator hose. Use a screwdriver or pliers (depending on what type of clamp you have) and remove the radiator hose from the vehicle's water pump.

    • 4). Remove the fan and the belts. Loosen the bolts on the front of the cooling fan with a wrench and remove the fan. This will allow access to the pulley and belts. Remove the belts and the pulley from the front of the water pump.

    • 5). Remove the water pump. Remove the bolts holding the water pump to the engine with a wrench. Pull the water pump from its location. You may need to pry it off with a screwdriver.

    • 6). Prepare the engine for the electric water pump. Scrape the old gasket clean with a gasket scraper and wipe it clean with a rag. Place a bead of gasket sealer around the mounting location and set the gasket into place.

    • 7). Install the electric water pump. Set the electric water pump in position on the new gasket and replace the bolts from the previous pump. Tighten the bolts by hand until snug and continue until all of the bolts are in place. Tighten the bolts with a wrench. Wire the pump according to the manufacturer's directions and strip the ends of the wire about 1/8 inch to allow a terminal end to slip over the end. Crimp the terminal ends into place with a crimping tool. Run the wires to a relay switch and a temperature-sensitive switch (set to the temperature you wish the pump to turn on) and then to a manual bypass switch in the vehicle's driver compartment. From the bypass switch, route the wires to the battery, keeping them free of any hot or moving objects. Tie the wires into place with zip ties. Place the radiator hose into place on the water pump and tighten the clamp with a screwdriver or pliers. Tighten the radiator drain petcock.

    • 8). Replace the fan shroud. Slide the shroud into place and tighten the bolts with a wrench. Use a funnel to fill the radiator with coolant until full. Replace the radiator cap.

    • 9). Start the engine and bring it up to operating temperature. Ensure that the temperature-sensitive switch turns the fan on when the specified temperature is reached. Turn the engine off and turn the pump on, using the bypass switch to ensure that this switch is working. This switch can be used to circulate coolant when the engine is not running or in emergency situations. Turn the bypass off and close the hood.
