Purchasing new, big-name titles for current-generation consoles can quickly become a strain on your wallet. The Internet is full of free games that are yours for the download. Many are old games that publishers have abandoned, and some are the work of independent or small publishers. While they do not feature the same production value as some of the larger titles, developers of these cheaper games are free to experiment and innovate. - "Tribes 2" was a popular multiplayer shooter Vevindi released in 2001. When the company finally shut down their servers in 2008, a group of dedicated fans took over the rights to the game and restored its online function in 2009. A free download of both the game and new server patch are available on the "TribesNext" website.
- "Savage 2" is an interesting genre bender, combining real-time strategy and traditional action/adventure game play. Like most RTS games, the objective is to take over an enemy stronghold by directing your units attack. The difference in "Savage 2" is that all units are also real players. Choose between directing your army's strategy as the commander and fighting on the ground as one of the army's members. The game is free to download and play, but you can also upgrade to a premium account for some extra perks.
- "FEAR Combat" is the multiplayer component of the game simply called FEAR. Though you will not be able to play the single-player campaign, the advanced graphics and still-active multiplayer environment more than make up for the loss. "FEAR" was an acclaimed first-person shooter at its release, and the franchise is still going strong, so this one is definitely worth a chance.
