- 1). Determine how you want to install the car seat: using the LATCH technique or the shoulder harness. This article shows how to install the car seat using the shoulder harness because not all vehicles are equipped with LATCH (an acronym for Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren).
- 2). Place the base behind the passenger or driver's seat. Make sure that the red lock-off is facing toward the rear of the auto.
- 3). Open the lock-off by pulling on it, and guide the shoulder/lap belt through the base. The belt has to go under the lock-off. Fasten the seat belt, and pull tightly on the shoulder belt so it is secure.
- 4). Press the lock-off firmly until you hear it snap. The seat belt should be tight, and you should not be able to adjust it at all. If it is loose, unbuckle it and try fastening it again.
- 5). Place the car seat on the base and make sure it is facing the rear of the auto. When you press down on the base, you will hear the seat click into place. If the seat is installed correctly, you should not be able to pull the seat out of the base.
