- Structured to assist with the direct operation and provide a voice about relative trends, the parent advisory board helps implement a quality that would not exist otherwise. A system of balance also is achieved between the parent advisory board and the board of directors.
- Reaching and exercising the main objectives of the Head Start mission is the primary function of the parent advisory board. Advising, recommending, providing support and consultation, and reviewing necessary information for advancement and improvement, are just a few of the actions behind this board's contribution to the effectiveness of Head Start goals and commitments. Exposure to these, and more, evolving ideas creates an environment for developing networks that craft life-changing differences in the community.
- Defined roles within the parent advisory board vary depending on the locale. Generally speaking, like most formal boards, a chair who drives the organization and development is a primary position to fill. Just two parents can effectively make a difference with concentrated efforts, but more can make a larger impact. It is wise, however, to keep the group from growing too large, as it makes decision-making more complicated. If a group does experience rapid or excessive growth, sub-groups dedicated to specific tasks can meet separately to streamline the decision-making process.
- Specific terms, such as how often the board meets, how long each meeting lasts, and what the term limits are, should be agreed upon and understood before members join. Most advisory board members aren't employees, so being an active part of the Head Start mission must be payment enough.
- When an issue or challenge is too complex for the board of directors, the parent advisory board can address it outside of the usual responsibilities of the formal board. Opening the door to the perspectives of this parent group can bridge the gap between the solution and the problem. Best of all, a primary component of the Head Start mission calling for parental involvement is not only met, but exceeded.
