If you use a treadmill to get a cardio workout, you know the benefits, but did you know that it also assists in strengthening and toning the core muscles? The core muscles are needed to give you a solid foundation, and it also transfers energy from the center of the body to the legs and arms.
Here is a closer look at the muscles that make up the core.
•Rectus Abdominis - This muscle can be a pest at times, and you may strive to keep it firm.
It is known as the "six pack", and is located along the front of the abdomen.
•Erector Spinae - This group of muscles straightens the back and rotates it to on side or the other.
It consists of 3 muscles that run along the neck to the lower back.
•Multifidus - The Multifidus extends and rotates the spine.
It is located underneath the Erector Spinae.
•External Obliques - These muscles, flex the trunk forward, functions during breathing and tilt the pelvis.
•Internal Obliques - The Internal Obliques work with the External Obliques.
These muscles are known as opposite-side rotators.
•Trasverse Abdominis - These muscles protect your spine and wrap around it to give stability.
They are the deepest group of abdominal muscles.
•Hip Flexors - The Hip Flexors are the Pectineus, Satorius, Illiacus, Rectus Femoris and Psoas Major.
They are in the front of the pelvis and upper thigh.
•Gluetial Muscles - Gluteus Minimus, Medius and Maximus are part of this muscle group.
Minimus and Medius are found at the side of the hip, while Maximus is found at the back of the hip and upper thigh.
•Piriformis - The Piriformis is located by the Gluetial muscles.
•Hamstrings - Opposite of the Quadriceps, they run along the back of the thigh.
•Hip Abductors - Located at the medial thigh A treadmill workout also works the legs, more specifically, the Quadriceps and the Triceps Surae Muscle.
You can also get your Triceps and Biceps in on the action if you swing your arms while working out.
Walking, jogging and/or running takes care of many muscles in the body, and using a treadmill is a great way to stay in shape.
You are truly working the entire body including the heart.
