- Fungi are tiny plants that sprout and grow roots like other plants. When they make their homes on other plants, they feed on the tissues and grow. This eventually drains the host plant of energy and nutrients, causing it to wilt and die. Some types of fungal disease are mildew, fruit rot and black mold, according to Harvest Wizard.
- Milk and water solutions, like commercial tomato fungicides, work by coating plant leaves to prevent new fungi from forming roots and establishing.
- Veggie Gardener reports on a tomato disease called blossom end rot, which is usually caused by a calcium deficiency in the soil. A milk and water solution sprayed on the tomato plant's leaves often corrects this situation.
- Pour 3 cups of whole milk into a garden sprayer and spray the soil at the base of the tomato plants, recommends Veggie Gardener. If the blossom end rot is severe, repeat the procedure every three days. To prevent fungal diseases, Harvest Wizard recommends spraying the tomato plant leaves with a solution of 1 cup of skim milk and 9 cups of water.
