How to Re-Pot a Staghorn Fern

    • 1). Prepare the new pot by covering the bottom of a pot that is approximately 2 to 4 inches larger in diameter than the existing pot with a 1-inch layer of sphagnum moss.

    • 2). Fill the remaining pot with an all-purpose potting soil, leaving approximately 1 inch of space at the flower pot’s top.

    • 3). Remove the soil covering the staghorn fern’s root ball and gently lift the plant from the existing pot without touching the root ball. Gently brush away any excess soil from the root ball with your hand.

    • 4). Dig a hole that is approximately 1 inch deeper and wider than the root ball and gently lower the staghorn fern into the new pot. Recover the root ball with the all-purpose soil and pour 1 cup warm water into the center of the plant.

    • 5). Display the staghorn fern in a warm, humid area that receives full sunlight for at least six hours a day. Water the staghorn fern once or twice a week. If the fern’s leaves begin to form spots, you are over-watering the plant.
