- 1). Prepare the garden site in the fall for the beach strawberries. Till or dig the ground with a garden fork to a depth of 10 inches.
- 2). Amend the soil with 3 to 4 inches of compost. if your soil is not sandy, add 2 inches of sand.
- 3). Dig holes that are 1 inch wider than the beach strawberry's root ball.
- 4). Remove the plant from the container, being careful to not disturb the root ball.
- 5). Insert the root ball into the hole and fill around the plant with amended soil. Keep the plant at the same depth as it was in the container. Do not plant it deeper, or the stems may rot away. If the plant is set too shallow, roots will not receive sufficient moisture to grow.
- 6). Firm the soil around the plant to remove air pockets.
- 7). Repeat steps 3 through 6, spacing the holes 10 inches.
- 8). Water the beach strawberry plants to a depth of 6 inches. The beach strawberry is drought tolerant.
- 9). Feed the beach strawberry plants during the growing season with all-purpose fertilizer. Mix and apply according to label directions.
- 10
Prune the runners back. Sever them from the parent plant and dig them up. The runners can be transplanted into another part of the garden. If the beach strawberries are left to grow unchecked, they can quickly cover the ground.
