- 1). Research the nursing leadership programs, including online, college-based and professional organization-sponsored programs.
- 2). Review the requirements for admission to the programs. Candidates must have a bachelor's of science degree in nursing, or have two years of experience (approximately 1,040 hours plus per year) in a nursing management position, or a diploma or associate degree in nursing with five years of nursing management experience (1,040 hours per year). Candidates must hold an active nursing license.
- 3). Register and be accepted into a nursing leadership program.
- 4). Complete the nursing leadership program. Many programs are divided into eight modules that cover business management techniques as they apply to nursing, management theory and personal development skills. The programs, for the most part, provide 40 hours of continuing medical education credits. Complete the required competencies to qualify to take the nursing leadership certification examination.
- 5). Register for the nursing leadership certification examination after completing the educational courses; pay any applicable fees.
- 6). Prepare for the nursing leadership certification examination. Examination preparation handbooks are available for this examination.
- 7). Follow instructions as to what can be brought into the testing area. Take the nursing leadership certification examination.
- 8). Await examination results. Test scores will be sent electronically to the candidates within 10 business days.
