  According to the National Restaurant Association, bussers take water, bread and butter to guests and refill glasses as needed. They remove dirty dishes between courses and clear, clean and reset tables after diners leave.
  
  

Qualifications

• At most restaurants, busser jobs are entry-level positions requiring good communication skills, dependability, a well-groomed appearance and the physical ability to lift and carry.
  
  

Pay

• Bussers are typically paid minimum wage and usually receive 10 percent to 15 percent of the server's tips at the end of the shift. The federal minimum wage became $7.25 per hour on July 24, 2009, though some states have a higher minimum wage.
  
  

Advancement

• Bussers often move on to become restaurant servers, who are responsible for taking orders from diners and bringing food to the table.
  
  

Fun Fact

• A "Seinfeld" episode called "The Busboy" from the sitcom's second season in 1991 featured George (Jason Alexander) accusing a busser of setting a menu too close to a candle and causing a fire.
