- 1). Prep the roof. Sweep the roof with a broom. Use a hammer to drive every raised nail into the sheeting.
- 2). Install #15 tar paper as an underlayment. Nail the tar paper to the wood sheeting with plastic cap roofing nails. There should be one nail for every square foot of paper. Cut the tar paper 1/2 inch up from the drip edge with a razor knife.
- 3). Install starter strip along the drip edge and in any valleys. Cut a section of roll roofing material approximately 18 inches wide with a razor knife. Use a margin trowel to apply a 3 inch wide layer of roofing tar along the drip edge. Place the factory cut edge of the starter strip flush with the drip edge. Press it into the roofing tar. Nail the cut edge every 3 to 6 inches with 1 inch roofing nails.
- 4). Measure from the drip edge up the roof 35 1/2 inches on both ends of the roof. Use a chalk box to make a line from these measurements.
- 5). Spread a 3 inch wide layer of roofing tar with a margin trowel along the roof edges.
- 6). Roll out the first row with the one side on the chalk line. Leave 1/2 inch of overlap at the side edge. Cut the roll with a razor knife at the far end at least 1/2 inch past the edge. You'll trim the overhang later.
- 7). Secure the roll roofing material by hammering a 1 inch roofing nail every 3 to 6 inches at the top and by pressing the other three sides into the roofing tar. The nails should be 1 inch down from the top.
- 8). Install remaining rows. Measure 3 inches down from the top of the previous row. From this mark, measure up the roof 36 inches. Snap a chalk line at the 36-inch mark. Apply a layer of roofing tar across the top 3 inches of the previous row. The roofing tar must cover all nail heads. Nail each row of roofing material along the chalk lines. Press the bottom and sides firmly into the roofing tar. Install each row the same way.
- 9). Create waterproof seams. Nail the bottom end as you would a top edge. Apply a 6-inch wide layer of roofing tar from the top edge to the bottom edge. Lay the overlap piece even with roofing tar. Firmly push this down.

Install ridges and hip pieces. Do this with 12-inch wide strips similar to the starter strip. Hold them in place with roofing tar. - 11
Cut the overhang around the roof edge with a razor knife. The overhang should extend approximately 1/2 inch past the roof.
