How to Keep Bait Minnows Alive While Ice Fishing

    We're All Just Little Fish

    • 1). Buy, beg or borrow a metal minnow bucket that is at least one gallon big. It should have a smaller container that you can lift out of the larger bucket. In this way, you can keep the minnows or shiners insulated from the cold and alive a couple of days before you go fishing. You also need to get a plastic fish scoop. Sometimes a plastic kitty litter scoop can be used in a pinch, if the slots are very thin.

    • 2). When you pack your equipment for your fishing trip, be sure to bring the minnow bucket, a watch, a plastic minnow scoop and a water proof container like a water bottle or thermos cup.

    • 3). Place bucket directly on ice next to you on the fishing hole.

    • 4). Fill your cup or bottle with the water from the hole you are going to fish out of. Tip a generous splash into the minnow bucket. This will help them gradually get used to the cold water.

    • 5). About every hour, take out a cup of water from the minnow bucket and replace it with a cup of cold water from the hole you are fishing out of.
