Bass fishing is a relaxing way to spend a day in the early summer. Most bass lurk in the shallow water most of the day in the early summer since the water is still fairly cool in most locations. Feeding periods may be longer this time of year, and bass will hit several different types of lures, depending on the time of day you are fishing. - According to Bass Resource.com, big bass like to hang out in the shallow parts of the lake during early summer. If you are fishing shallow water, keep quiet, as any boat noise may scare the fish. Turn off the big boat motor and use your trolling motor when fishing in the shallows. Bass often bite top-water plugs at daybreak, so that time of day is a good bet when fishing shallow areas. As the day progresses, switch to fishing with a jig or a soft plastic bait. Use weightless baits around grassy areas because they won't hang up in the grass as easily. Work weightless baits slowly, just as you would a plastic worm.
- If you want to fish a large area of water in a short period of time, crank baits are the way to do it. Try fishing main lake points with crank baits in early summer, using both shallow and deep diving baits. Vary your speed while reeling in your bait to get the interest of big bass. Cast crank baits near feeder creeks and at the mouth of coves to catch early summer bass since big bass often stop in these areas on their way to deeper parts of the lake. Choose white spinner baits to fish in large areas of water. When fishing with a spinner bait, cast over logs and tree limbs to reach areas that often hold bass.
- Flipping is a technique that bass fishermen use in shallow water. Place plastic worms on long flipping sticks and use them in shallow water. While flipping, ease your boat near the shore. Use a trolling motor instead of your big boat motor, so you do not scare the fish. Flip-cast your worm into heavy cover in shallow water because this is where big early summer bass like to hide. Repeat flip-casting, moving to different areas but staying in the shallow water. Experiment with different worm colors to see which one works best.
