- 1). Move the table to an open, well-ventilated workspace. Wear a dust mask before sanding or working with chemicals.
- 2). Stir a can of sanding sealer thoroughly. Use a natural-bristle brush to apply an even coat to the table, following the direction of the wood grain.
- 3). Wipe away the excess product with a clean rag before it dries. The sealer will be completely dry within minutes.
- 4). Sand the maple wood with a 280-grit sanding sponge to smooth out fingerprints, blemishes and other surface imperfections. Dust the table thoroughly, then wipe it with a tack cloth to remove any sawdust left after sanding.
- 5). Seal and protect the maple using a polyurethane wood varnish. Apply the product with a painter's rag or foam applicator brush in the direction of the wood grain. Allow it to cure overnight, then sand the coat with the 280-grit sponge.
- 6). Repeat the same procedure for at least one to two more coats of varnish to keep the table from cracking, drying and warping. Do not sand the top coat.
