- 1). Pursue a bachelors degree. Take core classes such as statistics, developmental psychology, test and measurements and personality theories. Some undergrad studies offer introductory classes on substance abuse counseling to expose students to the possibility of pursuing a career in the specialized field of drug and alcohol counseling. A masters degree will take two years on average and will include an internship, usually a semester in length. - 3). Pursue certification by contacting your state certification board.
