But that doesn't mean that there aren't any paying markets at all, and with a bit of research and imagination, and as long as you are a good writer, you should be able to get your short satire stories and other satirical work published, and generate at least some kind of income from it.
As I am involved in both writing and publishing satire I can hopefully be of some help to you, giving you the benefit of my knowledge to save you some of that research time. So here are my top tips:
- Satire can be used effectively in pretty much any genre, so if you are having trouble finding markets when presenting your work as satire then perhaps you should try writing satirical pieces for other genres. That way you can use your own personal style and talents, but still write for the opportunities that are available. Have a look at all the short story markets, and when you have a clear idea of what is out there have a go at writing for what publishers are actually looking for rather than writing a story and then trying to find a market for it afterwards.
- Satirical work is also very flexible. If you are used to writing short stories then perhaps you could turn your hand to articles, spoof news, political commentary and so on. This will increase the number of possible markets which are open to you.
- Take a close look at self-publishing. There are loads of ways that you can do this, from posting your work on a revenue sharing website or setting up your own blog or website with advertising on it, to making your own ebook or using a print on demand company to let you sell print books with no up front investment in getting them printed.
