- 1). Write a screenplay. Plenty of people have "ideas" for great movies, but the truly committed writers have already brought their ideas to life. If you want to establish yourself as a movie writer, you will need to have at least one finished product to promote.
- 2). Make the right friends. Intern with production companies, volunteer at cinematic events, sign up as a movie extra. Place yourself constantly in the types of environments where you can make valuable contacts in the industry.
- 3). Enter screenwriting contests. Each year, companies hold screenwriting contests allowing undiscovered talent to present their works for possible use in films. Just make sure to copyright your screenplays before submitting and always research the contest beforehand to avoid scams.
- 4). Pitch your story at movie idea websites. Sites like Perfect Pitch and Virtual Pitchfest allow users to submit ideas and expose them to filmmakers seeking the next hit film. Again, make sure to copyright your work.
- 5). Contact independent filmmakers. While you may find it impossible to gain the attention of a major player like Spielberg or Tarantino, you can often get your start by seeking out local, indie filmmakers looking for a good story. Even if your movie never hits major theaters, it will dramatically improve your resume and help to open more doors in the future.
