- 1). Think about what you want in your kitchen and what you need from the space. Decide if what you want from your additional in your kitchen is space for the kids, for hobbies or for relaxation.
- 2). Measure your kitchen carefully. Copy these dimensions onto graph paper using one square on the graph paper to represent one square foot of space in your kitchen, including any built in cabinetry. Assess the space available in your kitchen and what you are willing to sacrifice to create a room in your kitchen. Make that unused breakfast nook or kitchen dining area into an all new room in your kitchen, or take advantage of an empty corner.
- 3). Plan out your multifunctional kitchen space, including work surfaces and storage needs. Keep lighting needs in mind as your room in your kitchen.
- 4). Determine a budget for your kitchen project. Depending on your budget, you may need to rely on materials and furniture you already have in your home; or look to thrift stores, discount stores and garage sales for materials; or splurge on custom cabinetry or that perfect furniture find if you have the funds.
- 5). Visit your local home improvement center if you want to use coordinated cabinetry to build in a desk and storage area to use as an office, homework center or craft space in your kitchen. Look at lighting and storage options.
- 6). Clear out the space and bring in what you want to use to define your new space, whether that's your new cabinetry or furniture, a rug, light fixture or paint color to create the look of a separate room within your multifunctional kitchen.
