- A unique way to add color or pattern to your bed, chair or futon is to make your own fleece blanket. Purchase 2 ½ yards of thick fleece in the pattern or color of your choice. Cut 6-inch long and 2-inch thick strips across the entire edge of the fleece. Repeat on the opposite side. At the top of each strip, tie a simple knot. The result is a simple fringe blanket that looks more expensive than it actually is.
- Having pictures of your favorite people or places is comforting when away from home for a long period. Colorful postcards make unique displays in addition to or in place of photos. Instead of taping the photos on the wall in a haphazard way, showcase them proudly. Purchase inexpensive frames from a discount store or thrift shop. Mix and match different frames for an eclectic display or go monotone with all one color. Some dorms or apartments do not allow nailing objects to the wall, so use Velcro strips. If allowed to use tacks, hang decorative string from the frames and secure to the wall with a tack. Group photos or postcards together to create an interesting focal point in the room.
- Add softness and color to the room by making your own closet cover. Some rooms may not have proper closet doors and a closet cover is an excellent way to cover up piles of dirty clothes in an instant. Purchase an adjustable shower curtain rod along with a shower curtain that complements the rest of the decor in the room. Decorative shower rings also add a bit of flair. Hang the rod and curtain in the closet frame. For a more do-it-yourself craft, purchase a solid color fabric and decorate it with iron-on appliques, fabric or paint. Punch holes at the top of the curtain with an awl (available at craft stores) and insert shower curtain rings. The closet cover transforms the room into a warm and inviting space.
- Flowers and plants bring color and life to any room. Reuse empty glass bottles to create simple vases for small bouquets or plants. Soak the bottles in soap and warm water to remove the labels and clean thoroughly. Purchase glass paint from a crafts store to paint brown or green bottles. If using clear bottles, add a few drops of food coloring to the water. Line up the vases on a windowsill to catch the light or group small and large bottles together for an eye-catching display.
