- Build your own shelves with wood, a renewable resource.wood image by Henryk Olszewski from Fotolia.com
Wood shelving projects represent a great way to reuse salvaged wood or build economically using cheap lumber from the home improvement store. If you want to use wood posts and affix wood shelves to the wall, just determine the right technique for nailing posts to wall studs. Wood shelves work for walls made of materials like drywall, wallboard, concrete and lumber (stick-built). - Building simple shelves may involve ready-made lumber supplies, such as 2-by-4s and plywood sheets. These shelves make perfect storage spaces for garages, basements, laundry rooms and workshops. To make shelves permanent instead of temporary, affix the wood posts to the wall studs.
- You can affix wood posts to the walls, lining them up with wall studs behind your drywall. These posts can serve as the frame for adjustable wood shelves. For example, over these posts you can nail strips of wood shelving notches. These strips should be the same height and width as the posts. With notches, you will be able to add or change the position of plywood or metal shelves at any time based on your storage needs.
- You can also use wood posts and cross beams from discarded wood pallets to create wooden collector shelves. For example, Ana White, a do-it-yourselfer from Alaska, cut the lower end of a pallet off using a saw. These wood collector shelves are useful for storing anything, including dishes, wine bottles, books and art supplies. To mount these reclaimed pallet shelves on the wall, support them with metal brackets affixed to the wall's studs with steel screws.
