  Rome is a popular destination for European and U.S. tourists, as well as local Italians who often visit the city on weekend trips. It is a city of awe-inspiring architecture, friendly people and good food that provides the ideal location for a romantic getaway or well-deserved rest. It is a relatively safe city, and so female travelers should have no qualms about traveling here alone. However, like all cities, it is important to use common sense and to stay self-aware to avoid any difficulties.
  
  

Ask for Help

• Rome is a tourist city and there are plenty of police officers, hostel owners and fellow travelers around to ask for help. They will be able to tell you about problem areas of the city and safe areas to visit at night, and can give you recommendations about the best tourist attractions. If you are in need of assistance, shop and café owners make good ports of call. In Rome, in the main tourist areas, many local people speak at least a little English. If you ever feel threatened, then head to the nearest crowded place, such as a busy restaurant or central square.
  
  

Be Firm

• Italian men are not afraid to try their luck with female tourists, and if you are traveling on your own you are likely to be approached. This unwanted attention could even come from someone who pulls up in front of you on their motorbike. Italian culture is one of exuberant language and hand gestures, which could come across as forceful and intimidating on first impression. However, in general, this attention is harmless and can be talked away with a simple, but firm, "No thank you." Firmness is important, as uncertainty, hesitation or suggestive body language will be easily detected. You can reduce this unwanted attention by not making it immediately obvious you are a tourist. This can be achieved by not openly carrying a guidebook or map and by keeping your camera out of sight. If you are very uncomfortable with being approached, you can always wear a wedding ring, which should deter any opportunistic onlookers.
  
  

Befriend Fellow Travelers

• Just because you arrived in Rome alone, it does not mean that you have to see the sites on your own. If you take leisurely breakfasts or relax in the communal areas of your hostel or hotel, you are likely to strike up conversation with fellow travelers. By nature, most travelers are friendly, outgoing and keen to share their stories with anyone who will listen. After the initial introductions, you can see sites such as the Statue of David, Colosseum and the Pantheon together.
