Question of the Day: Electronics

A couple of recent entries in the parenting blog Blogging Baby -- one on which electronics you have in your child's bedroom, and one on a child led astray by MySpace -- got me to thinking about one of the small advantages I have as the parent of children with special needs, which is: I have a lot more control over their environments than a lot of parents do. Now of course, this depends on whether your child's special needs make them more dependant on you or more evasive; mine are the former, and it's very easy to monitor what they watch, and very easy to deny them the full spectrum of music and movies and online snares.

They don't understand or care much what they're missing, and when they do, I don't have to worry about them sneaking off to get it because I watch them every dang minute. There's always the occasional TV show surfed by that I'd rather they didn't see, or the song on the radio that I've banned from the iPod, but I think I have an easier time of it than a lot of parents in limiting what my kids see, hear, and play with, especially alone in their rooms (and especially in my son's room, which is so full of clutter he can barely fit a small radio, much less a TV and video games). What electronic goodies does your child have in his or her room? Click on a response below, and use your browser's back button if you want to select more than one.
