- 1). Make a mutual decision to continue. Jointly decide together, and as a couple, that you are going to stay together. Simply limping along with a vague idea of continuing is not enough. Make a strong verbal commitment to each other.
- 2). Cut off all ties with the third party. To heal the relationship, getting the third party out of your life is essential. While there is a chance that they may return to your lives someday, the trust-building process is fragile and cannot take much stress.
- 3). Figure out why the affair happened together. Determine what the risk factors were involved and if those factors are still in play.Figuring out the cause of the affair can be a hurtful process, but it is essential if you want to prevent an affair from ever happening again.
- 4). Take time to enjoy one another. When there is marital discord, it is tempting to resist fun activities and focus instead on the negative. Instead, take time to enjoy one another's company and to remind yourselves of why you are together.
- 5). Keep a transparent schedule. Allow your spouse to know about your comings and goings, which allows them to trust that you are where you say you are.
- 6). Consider outside help. After a marriage has been shaken, you may need the counsel of an outside party to heal the rift. Consider going to a support group or a marital counselor.
