- 1). Inspect the patio and deck at least once a year. Look for signs of wear or damage, such as splitting wood or cracked concrete. This allows you to address the issues before they become major problems.
- 2). Pound any loose nails back into the deck as you notice them. Nails that pop up present a hazard for people and pets. They can also lead to loose boards on the deck.
- 3). Sweep the deck and patio weekly to reduce the amount of dirt and debris that builds up on it. You can also use a leaf blower to get rid of the dirt.
- 4). Clean the patio and deck at least once a month. Spray the area with a hose or pressure washer. Use a mild detergent if necessary. A scrub brush allows you to clean tough dirt or stains on the deck or patio.
- 5). Apply a mixture of bleach and water to any areas of mildew or molding. The bleach will kill the mildew so it doesn't continue to grow.
- 6). Restain or repaint the deck as needed. Most decks will need this treatment every few years, depending on the quality of product used.
- 7). Add a waterproof sealant to the deck or patio. This protects the decking material and helps increase the longevity of the outdoor living space.
