- Measure and record the height, width and depth of the area into which you will install the utility cabinet. A well-built utility cabinet works for a wide range of needs, from basic storage to storing tools or craft items. Choose the style of cabinet based on what you will be storing.
- If you're building the project yourself, consider your woodworking ability, and make sure the plans you choose are clearly marked and are designed at your level. Your project will go more smoothly if you read and understand the plans well. If a builder is making the cabinets for you, he likely will be able to use any difficulty level of cabinet plan.

Look for books with a variety of cabinet-building projects, such as "Step-by-Step Cabinets & Shelves," published by Better Homes and Gardens, and "Cabinets, Shelves and Home Solutions: 24 Storage Projects Plus Ideas for Organizing Your Home, " published by the editors of Creative Homeowners. Find plans for free online download at Totally-Free-Woodworking-Plans.com, Renovation Headquarters or other free sites. Look for downloadable plans for purchase, in a wide range of prices, from Plans-Now.com or WoodStore.net, among other online sellers.
