- 1). Plant your grass seed in the fall. Purchase a type of grass seed that will do well in your soil conditions and climate zone. Grass seed comes as a mix or a blend. A mix contains several different types of grass seeds mixed together. A blend combines several types of seeds from the same genus. A blend is recommended.
- 2). Prepare the soil for the seeds. Remove the existing lawn, and clear the area to be seeded of rocks and large debris.
- 3). Spread soil conditioner and fertilizer. Use a tiller to break up the old soil and mix in the additives. Rake the soil level, then roll over the lawn area to compact it.
- 4). Spread the grass seed. Rake lightly and roll the area a second time. This will cover the seeds with a light layer of soil.
- 5). Cover the ground with material like mulch or hay to help the seeds retain moisture.
- 6). Water several times a day for 15 minutes for the first month or two, until the seeds are well-established and have started the germination process.
