- 1). Download Movie Maker (Windows Version 7) if you don't already have it on your computer. Go to the Windows Live Web site (see Resources). Click "Download Now." Click "Run." Check "Movie Maker" next to the boxes of the programs you want to install. Click "Next." Check the boxes if you want Bing as your default search provider and MSN as your browser home page. Uncheck them if you don't. Click "Next." Movie Maker will be installed.
- 2). Open Movie Maker. Click the "Start" menu on the lower left of your screen and click "All Programs." Click "Movie Maker." The video editing program will open.
- 3). Import the AVI video file into Movie Maker. Click "Import Video." Click the video file you want the audio to be split from and then click the "Import" button.
- 4). Split the audio from the AVI video file. Click and drag the clip you want to use into the "Audio/Music" part of the timeline. Click "Save to My Computer." Choose a name for the file and pick a destination location. Saving to the desktop usually works well. Click "Next." Choose a quality setting and click "Next." Click "Finish." The audio is now a separate file and will play in your computer's default media player.

Right-click the audio part of the timeline and click "Mute." Click "Save to My Computer." Choose a file name and a a place on your computer to save it and click "Next." Choose a quality setting and click "Next." Click "Finish." The video will be saved as a separate file.
