- 1). Determine your West Virginia residency status. Individuals are considered legal residents of West Virginia if they are a US citizen or legal alien and have lived continuously in West Virginia for 30 days, are a member of the US military and were a resident of West Virginia at the time of entry into the service, are a full-time student in West Virginia or have a valid West Virginia lifetime license. A statewide class B fishing license for a resident costs $19.00, while a statewide fishing license for a non-resident costs $37.00.
- 2). Determine your eligibility based on child support payments. Individuals who have not met child support obligations are not eligible to obtain a fishing license in the state of West Virginia. During the time of purchase, all individuals are asked to certify under penalty of perjury that they have met any child support obligations under West Virginia Code 48-15-303.
- 3). Determine your eligibility based on your age. Individuals aged 15-17 are eligible for junior sportsman fishing licensure (class XJ) for $16.00 in 2010.
- 4). Log on to the West Virginia DNR website, where you can purchase your license online. There are several associated costs to a license, including a conservation stamp and license fee, which, in 2010, costs $5.00 and $2.00, respectively, for residents and $13.00 and $2.00 for non-residents. You will need to give your driver's license and social security information, as well as physical characteristics including gender, eye color and hair color at the time of purchase.
- 5). Fishing permits can also be obtained at retail agents throughout the state and all county clerk offices. Or you can call the Hunting and Fishing License Unit at (304) 558-2758.
