The Sony DHG-HDD250 is a high-definition digital video recorder, or HD DVR. It's about the size of a DVD player and hooks up to a television to record HD programming much the same way TiVo does. The unit comes with an interactive onscreen programming guide that displays an entire week's worth of TV scheduling specific to each consumer's location. - The Sony DHG-HDD250 is equipped with flexible compatibility and aspect ratio settings. These setting allow users with different sizes and types of televisions and programming to adjust the DHG-HDD250 so that it records in the optimal format. Examples of compatibility include 1,080p and 720p displays. The wide-screen 720p format broadcasts 1,280 pixels horizontally and 720 pixels vertically. The 1,080p format displays 1,920 by 1,080 pixels. ABC, Fox and ESPNHD use the former. CBS, NBC and DiscoveryHD use the latter. The device is capable of recording standard HD and S-video formats.
- The Sony DHG-HDD250 has six outputs and one input. It has two analog audio outputs, two composite video outputs and two S-video outputs. The composite video and audio outputs are for standard playback of recorded programming's aural and visual components. S-Video is a special format for transmitting video that divides digital information into two channels, one for brightness and one for color, to produce a crisper image. The S-video outputs on the device allow it to broadcast programs recorded in S, or Super, video. The HDMI connection enables the DHG-HDD250 to record programming by ferrying information from the television to the HD DVR. This connection also is known as the Component YPBR connection.
- The Sony DHG-HDD250 is 16.9 inches long, 3.26 inches tall and 14.05 inches deep. It weighs 11.24 pounds, about the same as a small miniature poodle.
