- 1). Stop using alcohol or any other drugs completely. Cutting back your dosage will not count as being sober.
- 2). Surround yourself with friends who don't drink or participate in any drug related activity. Removing temptation is important in maintaining sobriety in its early stages.
- 3). Participate in a 12 step program designed to target the root of your alcohol or drug usage. These programs also deal with emotional and relationship issues which are important in maintaining a healthy lifestyle.
- 4). Find and participate in a local support group. Many support groups like Alcohol Anonymous hold meetings to share stories about sobriety and support each other in maintaining sobriety.
- 5). Enroll in a rehabilitation facility. Enrolling in a rehabilitation facility is often the last step in attempting sobriety.
- 6). Repeat steps 1 through 5 if you find that you have relapsed. Drinking or participating in drug use after attaining sobriety is considered a relapse.
