- Magical costumes can take on so many aspects that you will need to narrow down your choices a bit before you even begin to look for costume parts. Do you want to go with a classical look and become a fairy or leprechaun? Are you going to a Harry Potter party? Is a witch or wizard more to your style, or will it be a "True Blood" viewing night, complete with vampire costuming? Decide on your magical genre, and make a decision on what you need from there.
- One of the most popular magical types of costumes is also one of the easiest. The Harry Potter world is based on the real one, with just a few extra magical accessories. Boys wear slacks, shirts, ties and sweater vests, along with a cape for a magical cover. Wands can be made from short tree branches. Harry Potter lookalikes should wear round glasses frames and have a lightening bolt drawn on their forehead, Hermione clones can wear a long bushy wig, and Ron Weasely characters need very bright red hair.
- Fairy costumes can be concocted from ballet tutus, with the addition of homemade or store-bought fairy wings and a wand with a star attached. Leprechauns need a green suit with perhaps striped socks and a bowler hat, and should carry a small handled pot, spray-painted gold and filled with artificial gold coins.
- Traditional witch and warlock costumes begin with black clothing. Find a black cape to fit over the clothing and paint it using sparkle pens or silver marker, adding stars and moons. Create a wand out of a stick, either painting it or adding sparkly touches, depending on the look you want to achieve.
