Cardiff Transplant 2000

Cardiff Transplant 2000
As we enter a new century we also enter a new era in transplantation. One of the most discussed topics worldwide in the transplant community is the double-edged sword of immunosuppression. The 3 Annual Congress of the British Transplantation Society was held in Cardiff, the capital city of Wales, United Kingdom. This meeting brought together many members of the transplant community in the United Kingdom and abroad for scientific and abstract presentations on the advances in the field of solid organ transplantation. This report will focus on the plenary sessions that emphasized the desire of the transplantation community to maximize short and long-term patient outcomes while minimizing toxicity and graft loss related to long-term immunosuppression. The experience with and data on long-term effects of toxic immunosuppressants is greater by far in the kidney transplant population. Consequently, the discussions at this meeting drew primarily from this field.
