Cholecystectomy Prior to Renal Transplantation?
Should patients with a history of cholecystitis have an elective cholecystectomy prior to renal transplantation?
Yes, absolutely. We even perform elective cholecystectomy in patients with asymptomatic gallstones. The complications associated with leaving the gallbladder in place can be awful; we have seen perforations, common duct stones, and death.
