Dimple Surgery 101

Many people find dimples to be cute and endearing.
Now, with dimple surgery, anybody that really wants a set of dimples can finally have them.
The process is fairly simple and the results are permanent.
For many, this is the ultimate goal when undergoing any surgical procedure for appearance enhancement.
Natural dimples are created when there is a minor imperfection in the cheek musculature.
When a person smiles the skin breaks away from the rest and cause a small indention in the cheek.
Because this is essentially a simple process that the skin undergoes to create the dimple, it makes it possible for dimple surgery to be available to patients who desire this particular look.
The procedure itself is very simple.
It can be completed in an office setting under general anesthesia.
There are no implants used during the process and the entire procedure usually lasts 20 minutes from start to finish.
Most patients are totally awake the entire time, but for those that prefer to be asleep can do so if prior arrangements are made.
Once the surgery is complete, the patient can leave almost immediately.
Regular routines can be resumed once the process is complete.
Essentially, the dimple is created by using a biopsy instrument.
A circular motion is done against the inner cheek, thus extracting some of the tissue.
This creates a hollowed section in the cheek area which appears to be a dimple.
A knot is tied which allows for the dimple to appear even when the patient is not smiling for a few weeks.
After the skin has more time to heal, most results are the appearance of the dimple only when smiling.
There are many things to consider when opting for dimple surgery.
Placement and size of dimple are the main concerns when undergoing this procedure.
Many people have a specific idea of what they want their dimples to look like, but surgeons can certainly help to guide those choices based on your facial features.
Final results for the procedure can be expected after four weeks.
During the recovery time patients only have to do a mouth wash and keep the area as clean as possible.
Patients are able to return to work the following day after the procedure.
Swelling is a typical side effect and should go down after a few days.
While dimple surgery is a fairly simple procedure, there are some possible complications.
Because the procedure is still fairly new, not all of the complications have been discovered.
The most common complications are unwanted dimples when not smiling and the need for further dimple surgery because the indention is nonexistent after healing.
Anybody who is opting for dimple surgery can be rest assured that the procedure is not complex and should expect a fast and simple recovery.
However, people should keep in mind that the procedure is still new and not all complications have been accounted for.
Most importantly, dimple surgery is a permanent solution for many people and once a dimple has been created it is essentially impossible to remove.
