- 1). Measure the dimensions of the basement floor where you intend to place your indoor pond. You should not locate it where it will receive direct sunlight, as this will encourage algae growth. You shouldn't put it near windows that will be opened a lot, as that will make it difficult to control the temperature of your pool.
- 2). Cut four lengths of 2-by-4-inch wood to the exact length of the outer dimensions of your pool. Divide the length in inches by 16, rounding off. Cut out twice this many sections of 2-by-4, plus two. These sections should be about 6 inches taller than the depth that you will fill your pool to. Nail half the short sections of 2-by-4 to one of the long lengths, so that they point straight up from it. Nail one of the other long sections of 2-by-4 to the tops of the short section, so that you have a framework wall. Connect the remaining sections of 2-by-4 in the same manner, to form a second wall.
- 3). Cut four sections of 2-by-4 that are the width you want your pool to be on the outside, minus 7 inches. Divide this length in inches by 16. Cut twice this many short lengths of 2-by-4. Make two shorter walls in the same manner as the previous walls.
- 4). Attach these shorter walls to the head and foot of the long outer walls with hammer and nails. You should now have a box of 2-by-4s without top or bottom.
- 5). Cut out panels of plywood to cover both the inside and outside of your frame. Nail them to the frame with the finishing nails.
- 6). Line the bottom of the frame with 1-inch polystyrene insulation board. Cut it to the proper dimensions with the utility knife.
- 7). Multiply the height of your pool in feet by two. Add its length plus one foot to this figure. This is the length of pool liner that you will need. Multiply the height by two, add that figure to your pool's width, and add one foot. This is the width of pool liner that you will need. Get the pool liner. Fill the frame with it, so that the fabric drapes evenly over the sides. Place another 1-inch polystyrene insulation board in the bottom of the pool, in the liner. Cut a one-foot square out of one corner of this liner.
- 8). Fill the pool with water, up to your desired depth. After the pool is full, nail the liner to the frame. Add water filtration and aeration systems.
- 9). Stack rocks up on the sides of the pool to give it rock walls. Place flat flagstones on the tops of the frame, to give the pool a more natural look and to hide the frame and liner. Place potted plants around the sides and on the top.
