Norton Antivirus Problems With TurboTax

    What Norton Does

    • Norton AntiVirus was designed to stop malicious software (malware) from harming your computer which includes viral attacks, spyware, worms, trojan horses and more. Malware is a computer contaminant known for infiltrating computers in a bid to steal confidential information (such as passwords), crash your hard drive, or work quietly in the background collecting data. Make certain that Norton AntiVirus, or a similar program, is installed and activated on your computer to thwart cyber attacks.

    What TurboTax Does

    • TurboTax is a software program which helps taxpayers complete their federal and state taxes. Step-by-step instructions help users navigate their way through complex tax code, completing their returns and checking them for errors. Customers may send their returns off to the IRS and to their state taxation department electronically. Make certain that Intuit TurboTax is installed, activated and updated on your computer to use this program.

    Error 1304

    • Problems between TurboTax and Norton typically occur when the former program is being updated. You already have successfully installed both programs on your computer, but when it comes time to complete a TurboTax update, you may receive Error code 1304. If this happens, you may need to temporarily turn off Norton AntiVirus or Norton Firewall (see Reference 1).

      Error code 1304 appears for several reasons one of them being that an anti-virus program is interfering with Windows Installer.

      You can fix this error by doing the following:

      * Log in to your computer as an administrator

      * Exit all programs and close browser windows

      * Turn off all anti-virus, firewall, desktop search, anti-malware or back up programs you've installed

      * Update Turbo Tax.

      You may have to restart your computer for the changes to take place. Repeat the process if your first attempt is unsuccessful. A second solution is to clean up your hard drive, and then install (or update) TurboTax. A third solution is to download the Windows Installer (see Reference 1).

    Other Problems

    • Most problems between TurboTax and Norton AntiVirus can be resolved if the latest releases of these programs have been installed on your computer. Error 40 is a generic download problem that can occur when a firewall program blocks installation.

      Manually configure firewall software by adding these processes as exceptions:

      * C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\Update Service\IntuitUpdater.exe

      * C:\Program Files\Common Files\Intuit\Update Service\IntuitUpdateService.exe

      Norton AntiVirus is often sold separately from Norton Firewall, but the two are sometimes bundled together and marketed as Norton 360, an all-in-one security program. Check which Norton products you have installed on your computer in order to take the appropriate action (see References 2 & 3).
