The World Tourism Organization estimates that tourism will continue to grow through at least 2020. To meet this demand, as well as the public's increasing interest in ecologically-sound travel, Detroit hotels have made a concerted effort to "go green" and offer tourists environmentally responsible alternatives. - The Townsend hotel in northwest Detroit demonstrates its commitment to environmental responsibility in a number of ways. The hotel offers organic foods and beverages and uses local produce when possible. The hotel also provides blankets made of recyclable materials. Water conservation systems function in the toilets and showers; and the hotel uses eco-friendly cleaning supplies and bio-degradable trash bags. In addition to providing accommodations for travelers, the hotel hosts weddings, business meetings, conferences and special events.

Guests can chose to "Green Their Hotel Stay" by donating to a rainforest preservation fund. The Marriott corporation has committed two million dollars to this fund. The Marriott corporation contributes funds to the rainforest preservation fund when groups of guests (10 rooms or more) book rooms at the Marriott hotels. Marriott offers green services to meeting planners at their hotels, including recycle bins, recycled pens and notepads, linen-less tables and leftover food donations. The Country Marriott, which connects to the General Motors Center and People Mover transit station of downtown Detroit provides one of central Detroit's Marriott options for "greening Detroit."
