- Don't dismiss the gift card as being too impersonal. In fact, 30 percent of teachers polled by the National Education Association said that a gift card and a heart-felt thank you note were their first-choice gift. Your gift doesn't need to be large, but any day care teacher has use for a gift card. Choose a store that has a wide variety of products, like a department store or a general chain store such as Target or Walmart. You can also give a standard MasterCard or American Express gift card that the teacher can use anywhere.
- Give the day care teacher an ornament made by your child. This is an appropriate option if money is tight and you want to give her something small but meaningful. Many teachers collect ornaments made by children they've taught over the years and always enjoy adding to the collection. Include a sincere thank-you card and have your child sign her name if she's able to do so.
- The holidays are always full of new release movies, and seeing more than one can be cost-prohibitive on a day care teacher's salary. Buy a pair of movie tickets for an evening show, or buy several tickets at a reduced rate and divide them up amongst other teachers you plan on gifting.
- Working with small children can be rewarding but exhausting, give your child's day care instructor an hour of peace and relaxation with a gift certificate for a half-hour or hour long massage. Choose a local spa and confirm prices ahead of time, so your certificate sufficiently covers the full price of the massage.
