How to Decorate Outdoor Fabric Canopies

    • 1). Brainstorm about how you'll use the canopy and pick a decorating theme. While many people use canopies for weddings, they are also used for summer barbecues, graduation parties, family reunions and other events. How you decorate will depend on the event's theme.

    • 2). Plan the décor of your canopy around the theme you've selected. Toss around ideas about lawn furnishings, lighting and general decorative accessories.

    • 3). Sketch out some ideas on a drawing pad. Incorporate floral designs, fabric patterns, lighting and other elements relevant to your theme. Clip ideas from magazines. Bring these images with you when you shop for accessories.

    • 4). Begin your decorating on the outside of the canopy. Bring some of the elements of the outdoors inside. Is there a beautiful mural painted on your back fence or an exceptional English garden with lots of flowers? Incorporate some of these elements into your design.

    • 5). Decorate the canopy poles, unless you're going for a minimalist look. Wrap them in flower garlands, swath them in gauzy materials, envelop them in soft string lights or make them part of an enchanted forest with twig branches tied with bows.

    • 6). Decide where the guests are going to sit. Rent tables and chairs if the affair is going to be large. Select linens that fit your design and color scheme.

    • 7). Create flower arrangements or centerpieces. For example, if you have an English garden with an abundance of red roses, ivy and other fragrant flowers, include those in the arrangements. Glass candle holders with floating flowers and candles are another option.

    • 8). Adorn a support pole in the center of the canopy with the motif you've selected for the outer poles.

    • 9). Decide what kind of flooring you want. If the event is going to feature dancing, rent a floor or build one. You can find floors at most party or wedding rental stores. Other options are artificial turf, carpeting or leaving the natural grass uncovered.

Set the mood with lights. Go with paper lanterns, fairy lights or candles for a soft, muted look. Select the lights---like everything else---with the event's theme in mind.
