- 1). Assemble the hitch tightener by placing the angled bracket onto the u-bolt with the angle facing up. Turn over the u-bolt so the threaded shafts face up. Hold the angled bracket with one hand while sliding a flat washer and lock washer onto each u-bolt with the other hand. Thread a 3/4 inch nut 1/4 inch down onto each shank.
- 2). Slide the hitch tightener over the hitch accessory shank with the angled bracket facing up and towards the rear of the hitch accessory. Leave the bracket loose.
- 3). Insert the hitch accessory into the trailer hitch and secure with a hitch pin.
- 4). With one hand, grip the hitch tightener so that the angled bracket rests against the bottom of the hitch accessory shank and hitch opening while the top of the u-bolt rests against the accessory shank. The u-bolt should be 3/4 of an inch away from the opening of the trailer hitch. Hand-tighten the 3/4 inch nuts.
- 5). Use a floor jack to raise the hitch accessory until the top of the hitch accessory shank contacts the inside top of the trailer hitch opening.
- 6). Torque the 3/4 inch nuts to 75 foot pounds. Release floor jack and check for any slack or movement between the trailer hitch and hitch accessory.
