Good Eats & Drinks: Things to Do in Calgary for a Night Out

Many visitors to Calgary don’t realize the excitement that occurs during the evening hours in the various nighttime establishments, as well as the good eats and drinks that they serve.  Sure, during the day and early evening hours, there are plenty of parks, hockey games and other recreational activities to enjoy, but there are just as many after hour hot spots as well.  Check out these local restaurants and bars when you’re looking for a great night out in Calgary.

For instance, if you are into easy lounging and great jazz, then the Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club is a bistro and jazz nightclub that offers treats for your ears as well as your stomach.  The Beat Niq Jazz & Social Club also includes the Piq Niq Bistro that is accessible from the nightclub through a side door that leads to an alleyway and the bistro itself.  The bistro is located on the side of the Grain Exchange building.  The atmosphere of the establishment itself is one of dim and intimate relaxation.

Located next to the to several little theatres, you’ll find the Auburn Saloon.  The Auburn Saloon has been referred to as Calgary’s “theatre bar”.  This “saloon” is well known for its martini list and several entrees and appetizers such as the Crab, Artichoke and Sun-dried Tomato Dip and the Smokin’ Ranch Chicken Pizza.

If you’re hankerin’ for a taste of the Old Country (Irish country that is), then The James Joyce might just hit the spot.   In addition to live music on Saturday night, you’ll also find an atmosphere that will take you back to the days of the ol’ pub.  The establishment itself is dominated by a long, antique bar that serves the finest Guinness stout in Calgary.  Plus, they feature the most authentic Irish carvery meals in town.

If tasty tapas and fondue treats are what you seek, then the Laurier Lounge will peak your interest.  Enjoy any number of fresh tapas and fondue with Swiss cheese, chocolate or beef as well as a great martini or glass of wine from their wide menu of options.
Now, if you’re not really looking to eat, but would rather enjoy the perfect Classic Martini, then you’ll want to hit The Oak Room. Located in the Fairmont Palliser Hotel, you’ll find this swanky little bar - complete with ornate ceilings and leather lounge chairs.  The Oak Room has a reputation for concocting the perfect Classic Martini.
