- Both PBX and key systems are privately owned telephone systems purchased by businesses. Their owners use them for communication purposes within a business or group of closely located buildings. Key systems usually appear in small businesses where only 50 or less employees work. PBX systems work better for larger businesses with a greater number of employees.
- A PBX system allows companies to offer telephone extensions to all employees within a business. A PBX system can include thousands of extensions. A key system offers the same service but with only around twenty extensions.
- Both types of systems offer features such as voicemail and music playing for callers on hold. Both systems also offer an automated switchboard connecting calls to appropriate extensions. Key systems typically offer fewer features than PBX systems. Most PBX systems offer call features such as call duration and tracking of phone calls, whereas key systems do not.
