Huawei mobile is a manufacturer of equipment and network components for the mobile phone and telecomm industry. The Chinese company has attained great success since its inception in 1987. It has given special importance to Research and development and has spent over $10 billion on R&D alone over the last decade. The company has been carrier of equipment for top 40 of the world's largest telecom companies. The company is quite popular even in western world including USA, UK and Canada.
One country where Huawei was late starter is Australia. Recently, Huawei seems to be gaining popularity in Australian market as well. It has announced revenue of $368 million this year, which is an increase of 61% over the last year. This has been the best year for Huawei mobile in Australia since it launched its operations there in 2004. The growth has been primarily driven by its LTE business and its deal with Vodafone Australia. The Executive management seemed jovial about this growth figures and attribute their success to their unflinching resolve towards quality. Huawei is now working with all the major telecomm carriers in Australia and employs about 700 staff members out of which, 70% are local.
In 2012, the company finally launched the much awaited smart phones line. Its flagship carrier includes ASCEND P1 phone and company is hopeful of its success in Australia. The company presence in Australia has been full of turbulent and unpredictable times. Last year, the company was banned from participating in certain tenders pertaining to Government agencies. The main reason for this ban was due to the allegations that Huawei has given unauthorized access to the Chinese government to its devices, which in turn makes the governments in the west vulnerable to security lapse and data leakage.
After hearing of the parliamentary committee, the representative of the committee unequivocally and categorically stated that there was still long way to go before the company was able to gain trust of Australian government and Australian people. A few months later it was suggested that the government should make a cyber security center where all the equipment provided by Huawei should be tested meticulously. This demand came after the announcement by the USA government that they were wary about the links Huawei mobile might have with the Chinese government. They almost alleged that the company was in collusion with the Chinese government and providing them access to confidential data of the USA government.
Huawei has suffered from such allegations and the company has out rightly rejected and refuted all such allegations as baseless. The company has challenged anyone to corroborate such allegations and accusations and is ready to face anyone in court of law. So far the company has moved forward successfully and its revenue has exceeded $ 35 billion in 2012, which is an increase of 8% over 2011. One has to wait and see for the response to its smart phone model ASCEND P1 on which, the company has put lot of hopes.
